Using a Wiki in Your Classroom for Teaching, Learning and Collaboration

Using a Wiki in Your Classroom for Teaching, Learning and Collaboration | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
You can edit wikis quickly, in a WYSIWIG environment. Using wikis, teachers can co-construct websites with their students. Many learning management systems have wikis embedded. Yet there is an advantage to using a public wiki (with privacy properly managed). Students will be able to access their work beyond a single school term. Their parents and friends may also be able to see it.

This article will discuss the wikispaces.com platform because Wikispaces provides free wikis for education and it is easy to use. This is the also the platform I am most familiar with. There are other platforms as well that are free to educators and that offer similar functions.

Yes, wikis. They're still great tools for learning.

Free Technology for Teachers: Almost Everything You Need to Know About Wikispaces

Free Technology for Teachers: Almost Everything You Need to Know About Wikispaces | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"If there is such a thing as an "old reliable" resource in the world of ed tech, Wikispaces qualifies. I've been using Wikispaces for various purposes and recommending it to others since I started this blog. Over the years I've created screencast videos about how to use it, created slideshows about how to use it, and linked to other educators' tutorials on it. But until very recently, Wikispaces didn't have its own YouTube Channel dedicated to showing you how to use the features they offer..."

The Moodle Wiki, A Crash Course In Fact Trustworthiness

The Moodle Wiki, A Crash Course In Fact Trustworthiness | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
Everyone uses Wikipedia, but there is a well-documented stigma from academia around the site (and similar Wiki-based operations by extension.) Sometimes, professors dismiss or ban usage of the site in the classroom—though admittedly this can be justified in some cases. A more detrimental behavior is to actively campaign against its use in general, even though faculties are at least as frequent visitors as the general public.

The official Moodle Blog offers some suggestions to make the most of the Moodle Wiki in classroom activities, or as part of one. For starters, the Wiki is flexible enough to be fashioned into other types of team or peer-based activities, like the Workshop but trading off flexibility for structure. Rather than focusing on a specific use scenario, the best learning outcome of the Wiki lies in the principles in which information is curated, sourced, and laid out. As the real value of Wikipedia lies in its information validation process—a harder endeavor to replicate as time goes by—using the Moodle Wiki in the classroom should emphasize the importance of reproducibility: given the primary sources, any collaboration process should be able to create a very similar Wiki in terms of content and structure.

Moodle plugins: Wiki export

Moodle plugins: Wiki export | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

This plugin adds the ability to export Moodle wikis as either PDFs or epub documents.

It was developed by Davo Smith of Synergy Learning, on behalf of the Judicial Institute for Scotland

Usage

Once the plugin is installed, you can visit a wiki, then click on the new 'Export as epub' or 'Export as PDF' links that appear in the activity administration block (with javascript enabled, similar links are inserted on the top-right corner of the page).

Users with the 'mod/wiki:managewiki' capability also get a 'Sort pages for export' link, that allows them to choose the order in which pages will appear in the export.

There is an additional global setting which allows a copy of any wikis on the site to be sent (as a PDF) to a given email address, whenever they are updated (note, this will not export all wikis on the site the first time it is configured, it only sends those that have been updated since the email address was first entered).

Looks very useful! Improves the ability to mark a wiki and ensures no pages are missed.

Gute Idee, schon oft wurde ich gefragt, wie man die gemeinsame Arbeit im Moodle-Wiki exportieren könnte.

Why I Still Love Wikispaces!

Why I Still Love Wikispaces! | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

I have been creating wikis with Wikispaces for quite some time. I use wikis for student collaborative projects and I use them during professional development. I use wikis as a place to collect, organize and share content that often originates on a blog post I've written.

Moodle 2.5 Wiki Beginner Tutorial - Moodle Tuts

Moodle 2.5 Wiki Beginner Tutorial - Moodle Tuts | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

Moodle 2.5 Wiki beginner tutorial. Moodle wikis are collections of collaboratively authored web pages, beginning with a home page that students can edit, and to which they can link more pages. You can create wikis at course, group and individual level.

Moodle Wikis are particularly useful as part of a group work activity. They are places where students can present the fruits of their research, or the drafts of their group reports, for comment and input from the other members of the group. The reporting features enable instructors to more fairly assess the individual input of team members, and to view the project within the course site.

E-Learning Certificate Program: Video Tutorials - Introduction to Google Sites

E-Learning Certificate Program: Video Tutorials - Introduction to Google Sites | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

Google Sites continues to provide web publishing system that attracts teachers and technologist. The tight coordination between Google Sites and Google Docs make this system very appealing to anyone who stores their document content in Google's Cloud.

These video tutorials will help you better understand how to get the job done with Google Sites.  It's a nerdy tool with many 'non-intuitive' aspects.  However, once you climb the learning curve and master the tricky menu/navigation creation process you can do a great deal with this "free" product!
