Digital Textbooks Are Forcing a Radical Shift in Higher Ed

Digital Textbooks Are Forcing a Radical Shift in Higher Ed | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

FOR SEVERAL DECADES, textbook publishers followed the same basic model: Pitch a hefty tome of knowledge to faculty for inclusion in lesson plans; charge students an equally hefty sum; revise and update its content as needed every few years. Repeat. But the last several years have seen a shift at colleges and universities—one that has more recently turned tectonic.

Design Thinking and its impact on Education Innovation

Design Thinking and its impact on Education Innovation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Today’s episode explores Design thinking. It’s everywhere in education right now, or at least we think it should be. It’s the topic of many of our blogs and we often use design thinking to help our partners reach their goals — whether it be designing a new school, helping to turn around an existing school, or working on resources for educators. But, how does it play into the work of school design and leadership?’, and ‘Where do I get started?’

Emily and Adam recently got together to discuss all aspects of design thinking. A lot of educators are just now getting familiar with design thinking, so they dive into the topic to explain what it is, how it can improve their practice, and to rethink how they facilitate learning. Adam has been using the design thinking approach for years and has lots to share, so tune in to this week’s episode to learn more.

Biggest challenges facing technology enhanced learning in higher education

How important is technology enhanced learning to higher education? In my experience of talking to and working with many academics and institutions, technology to enhance or engage students is very important. However, having been asked this recently I also think we should be asking: what are the challenges facing technology enhanced learning?
John Zuluaga's curator insight, February 23, 2017 6:32 PM

We for sure can overcome those challenges, it is just a matter of preparation. Training is not just a teachers' issue; in fact, learners are indispensable parties in the implementation of technology in institutions. Besides, it allows learners to be prepared for a future since in 21st century jobs, the use of virtual tools become a requierement for applying.

BYOD, OERs, & Tech in College Classrooms

BYOD, OERs, & Tech in College Classrooms | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Privileging BYOD can certainly help colleges’ leverage the devices that students already have and teach them to use them for academic pursuits. I’ve noticed that this is something that is missing among members of the generation that has grown up with mobile devices. As faculty and administrators in higher ed, we assume that they understand how to use their devices when, in reality, their understanding and ability is limited to certain uses.

Will Blockchains Revolutionize Education? | EDUCAUSE | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Blockchains, first introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto for use in bitcoin, are now being used across many industries. At their core, blockchains are trustworthy, distributed digital ledgers. Unlike databases maintained by a centralized authority that guarantees data integrity through its proven trustworthiness and practices, blockchains are records of transactions that are replicated across many systems (or nodes) and are cryptographically guaranteed to be immutable.

Let’s Ensure Data Analytics Improves the College Experience for Everyone | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When EDUCAUSE members identified their top 10 priorities for 2017, it was clear that data analytics is expected to play a big role. Data-informed decision-making is No. 3 on the list, and data management and governance is No. 6. Other initiatives, such as student success and completion (No. 2) and strategic leadership (No. 4), also are leaning more heavily on data than ever before.

The Data Workout: How It's Impacting Teaching and Learning

The Data Workout: How It's Impacting Teaching and Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"If you think data—in education, or any field—is cut and dry, think again. Working with data in the classroom, especially, can be either exhausting or exhilarating—depending on your fitness level. Data can be big, but also quite small. It’s often quantitative, but is increasingly qualitative."
