Many tools created by Google are increasingly becoming a mainstay of teachers digital toolkit. I am pretty sure that most if not all readers of Educational Technology and Mobile Learning use some form of Google products whether it is Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Classroom, Drawings, you name it. That being the case, and given the exponential integration of services in education, Google offers this excellent resource called Google Learning to help educators, teachers, students, and everyone else make the best of Google in their learning journey.

"Edtech, or “educational tech,” is the utilization of apps and tech devices for the purpose of teaching and learning. Edtech can happen inside or outside of classrooms, at any time, and in any place. Most modern edtech involves the use of a wireless internet connection and an electronic device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, or desktop computer. Edtech allows for one learner or five million to learn, anywhere on earth, and to take the same classes as each other." Via EDTECH@UTRGV

You don’t have to be a total technophobe to feel reluctant about adopting new technology in your business. Thousands of small- to midsized businesses (SMBs) are either not using or not correctly using new technologies like digital marketing, despite their ability to increase both efficiency and profitability.

When Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn published Disrupting Class in 2008, the current wave of education technology was still finding its footing. The book posited two predictions. First, online learning would grow rapidly in K-12 schools. But scale was not the endgame. Second, and arguably more crucial, was the opportunity ahead: with the right incentives in place, technology could scale with an eye toward optimizing for individual learners’ academic outcomes.

If we are to bring about lasting changes around the use of technology in teaching and learning in colleges and universities, we need to understand the practices that staff undertake and the challenges they face. Effective and sustained change comes from a place of working in service to pedagogies, and practices that support and surround learning and teaching. In order to better understand these issues Jisc commissioned research to gain more understanding about practice around learning and teaching and gaining insights beyond the technology-led.

Today, the classroom is much more dynamic and innovative than it used to be. While in years past, the classroom was seemingly immune to digitization, that’s no longer the case. Nearly every kid of every age has a smartphone and a digital-first mentality.

The flipped classroom approach is becoming increasingly popular. This instructional approach allows more in-class time to be spent on interactive learning activities, as the direct lecturing component is shifted outside the classroom through instructional videos. However, despite growing interest in the flipped classroom approach, no robust frameworks have been developed for the design or school/faculty-wide implementation of flipped classrooms. The aim of this article is to provide a foundation for the flipped classroom approach in Spector’s (Foundations of educational technology: integrative approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives, Routledge, New York, 2016) model of six pillars of educational technology. After reviewing previous discussion of the flipped classroom approach, each pillar (i.e., communication, interaction, environment, culture, instruction, and learning) is discussed in the context of flipped learning.

Students of today are much more technologically savvy than previous generations. Whatever age they are, once they step into the classroom, they will probably be Internet literate and technologically knowledgeable, at least at some extent. Presenting technology to students gives the teacher more ways to connect with them and this is one of the most important parts of a rewarding teacher-student relationship. Once you find something in common with the student, you are on the right way. Here is a list of websites that specialize in education technology and will give you inspiration and practical ideas for your lessons:

Without proper guidance and support, it is easy for teachers to feel overwhelmed and anxious about integrating technology into their classrooms. An Education Week report revealed that only about 50 percent of educators are comfortable with technology and an even smaller number use it for activities other than testing. Another study from Harris Interactive revealed that 89 percent of teachers think edtech improves student outcomes but only 14 percent of teachers use digital curricula weekly.

You would think that the annual Association for Learning Technology conference – held this year at the University of Liverpool – would be primarily focused on technology. But you might be surprised to find that discussions and presentations are centred far more on policy and people. In setting the themes for the conference, co-chair Helen O’Sullivan (University of Liverpool), and ALT CEO Maren Deepwell chose not to highlight particular hardware or software, but to look at the common issues that underpin the way technology is used. |
