Digital Identity Dev is a Process | Student Affairs and Technology

Digital Identity Dev is a Process | Student Affairs and Technology | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Our digital identities matter. What we post, share, say, upload, snap, and tweet represents our digital identity. It's our online presence. Regardless of how much you share, what you post can be read/seen by hundreds (if not thousands) of people. Say something really inflammatory and you might just see your social media missive showcased on major media sites. Unlike one-on-one face-to-face conversations that reside in our memories once concluded, digital communications have an almost eternal shelf life.

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to give a presentation on digital identity and career services. The webcast focused on the critical development that takes place via digital channels and how social media can impact career success.

Digital or Die – Building our Academic Digital Identity

Digital or Die – Building our Academic Digital Identity | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As a “young” researcher, I have been struggling for months with the concept of Digital Identity (DI). Digital Identity has been defined simply as “the permanent collection of data about us that is available online” by BinaryTattoo.

Up to the mid 90’s, pre-Internet days, academics built their scholarly identities via publications, conference presentations, workshops, etc. that they physically attended. Word of mouth about the quality of their teaching and research was another key diffuser and builder of their scholarly persona., such as annual conferences where vibrant ideas were exchanged with a lot of farewell hands-shakes and best wishes till “See you next year”.

Want to get fired from your first teaching job? Don’t read this article. Seriously. Just click on to something else. There’s nothing to see here. Move along....

First, let’s debunk the free speech myth: Many teachers believe they have the absolute First Amendment right to post anything they want on social networking sites, including party pix and diatribes about the boss. After all, they’re on their own time and using their own resources.

Sadly, the courts say otherwise.

Personal reputation in a social media world | Phil Bradley's weblog

Personal reputation in a social media world | Phil Bradley's weblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As anyone who knows me knows - I'm a bit of a social media buff. Between that and Internet search that's pretty much what I do all day. I spend a lot of time looking at how search, social and social search are converging at a huge speed, and I like talking about the implications of that. One of the things that people often ask me about - in connection with this - is privacy. For me, privacy is now mixed up with levels of authority, and for most of us, we're going to have to run an interesting tightrope between protecting our privacy and being seen as authoritative..

New! Digital Citizenship Song and Video

New! Digital Citizenship Song and Video | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Something you may not know about us here at Common Sense Media, is that quite a few of us are former classroom teachers! When we develop new materials, we always have our favorite memories to guide us. One thing we remember fondly is being amazed by how music transformed a classroom – kids would jump to their feet, whatever the song, to sing and sway while the teacher subtly wove word play and pattern recognition into the mix.

This summer, we worked with a great animator and composer to create our first digital citizenship song for elementary students!

Digital Literacy, Identity and a Domain of One’s Own - DML Central

Digital Literacy, Identity and a Domain of One’s Own - DML Central | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I must have about 10 domain names. That’s a lot less than some people I know, but 10 more than most people. Two of the domain names are those that I own on behalf of other people (my children) while the rest are for various projects and things I’ve done over the years. My doctoral work neverendingthesis.com is on one of them. I’ve got projects I share with other people (tidepodcast.org). And, of course, I have a canonical domain which includes my first and last name (dougbelshaw.com).

Revisiting digital capability for 2015 | Jisc digital capability codesign challenge blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

It’s been a hectic, interesting and sometimes information-overloaded couple of months on the Digital Capabilities frameworks project. Lou McGill and I have reviewed over 60 existing frameworks for describing the digital capabilities of staff, from professional frameworks which might only touch on digital practice, to frameworks from the IT industry, digital media, and business innovation. We’ve looked at a host of publications and web sites. And I’ve carried out interviews with dozens of people who are doing work in this area, whether they are based in professional bodies or in universities and colleges, or in industry and the professions outside of education.

Your personal brand | Learning with 'e's

The job market is increasingly competitive. Now more than ever, graduates need something more than a good degree to be hot candidates, to make employers sit up and take notice. Once you could expect to be invited to interview for your dream job if you presented your certificates, a resume of your past experience and some glowing references from the good and the great. Now that's probably not enough. You may not even be shortlisted if you don't stand out from the crowd. The selection process is increasingly unforgiving. Employers have such a choice of well qualified but unemployed young people right now, new graduates often don't even get a look in. So what exactly will tip the balance and get you noticed?
